Hundreds of thousands of dollars and volunteer hours have contributed to 50 years of successful service given by the Kiwanis Club of Alameda West.  Celebrate this momentous journey by joining the Kiwanis Club Dec. 10 at its 50th anniversary party at 5 p.m. at the Sheraton Denver West.  The cash bar starts at 5 p.m. and is followed by dinner at 6 p.m. The $50 registration per person is now open and includes dinner.  Registration closes Dec.1.

The festivities include noted speakers from projects the Kiwanis Club of Alameda West has supported over the past 50 years as well as their future projects.  As part of the club’s effort renewing its  commitment to community needs, working with other non-profits and its priority of helping youth, the club will showcase speakers including  Jane Barnes, former school board member of the Jefferson County School District; Dan McMinimee, Superintendent of Jefferson County Schools; Shannon Hancock, Executive Director of the Outdoor Lab School Foundation; Mag Strittmatter, Executive Director of The Action Club; Teo Nicolais, past president of Key Club International; and Jo Lynn Osborne, The ARC and a founder of the Aktion Club.

The Kiwanis Club of Alameda West has achieved a number of accomplishments during its half century start in 1966. Notable projects include building the Astronomy Building for the Mt. Evans Outdoor Lab School in 1974.  Later in 2005, the club partnered with 13 other Kiwanis Clubs to complete the Windy Peak Astronomy Building. Also, Kiwanis Club of Alameda West has helped with costs for students in need to attend and experience the Outdoor Lab Schools.  The club continues to work with other clubs on   projects such as the Write Stuff which provides school supplies and prepares packages to students in need. Additional Kiwanis Club of Alameda West projects include helping the Action Center and Lakewood Area Key Clubs and the list is ongoing as the club contributes time and money to a number of other programs in the Jefferson County area.   A future major project will involve the Bear Creek Lake Park.

The club itself has also evolved through the years.  The local organization that was once men only, now has more than half of its 43 membership as women. Additionally, both the current president Lindsey Finklang and president-elect Jane Barnes are women.
